Product Details

A fine example of a beautiful Victorian Vanity Box complete with its original silver gilt fittings. The outer of the box is made of the finest quality rosewood with ornate riveted brass banding and a matching brass cartouche, engraved MFH below a crown.

The box has a fully fitted interior lined with plush red velvet which holds the various bottles and pots, each with solid silver gilt tops. There are also two small trays fully fitted with accessories including scissors, button hooks, tweezers and a spoon. Every piece is made from beautiful hobnail cut glass and every lid is fully hallmarked for London, 1844 and the maker Charles Rawlings & William Summers.

The inside of the lid folds down to reveal a pull-out mirror behind it and a document pouch. The main tray also lifts out to reveal a larger storage space beneath for items such as brushes or combs.

The box is in excellent condition and even comes with its original leather storage case which probably accounts for the excellent condition of the box itself. The leather case itself is fairly rough with frayed edges, broken straps and missing stitching on the corners but it has a beautiful patina and still displays well. The interior of the box is excellent and the bottles too are in good order. There is some damage around the neck of one bottle (see photo) and some of the silver lids have small dinks in them but no major damages or anything detrimental. The gilding is bright and crisp with only a few minor areas of wear. We do not have a key for the box.
