A good Edwardian pedestal desk dating from the early 20th Century. It is made of oak with an arrangement of 8 drawers around a central kneehole, the bottom drawer on the right is double depth. Each drawer has its original art nouveau style brass handles and the drawers have nicely moulded fronts with reeded borders. The top of the desk has a good quality maroon writing surface with gilt edge and the whole piece stands on castors.
It is an excellent quality piece with dovetailed drawers and nicely finished moulding that continues on all 4 sides of the desk, meaning the back looks nicely finished so it could be used as a freestanding piece as well as against a wall.
The inside of the top drawer is stamped with the maker's name 'MAPLE & Co Ld".
The desk is in excellent condition for its age and has been well looked after. The wood has a nice warm colour and a lovely rich patina. The drawers open well and are generally clean and tidy inside. There are some normal signs of age and use, some minor knocks, light surface marks and small shrinkage splits but nothing detrimental. The writing surface has some signs of wear but no major damages and is certainly very usable. The desk has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.
