A nice example of a small English oak coffer or sword chest dating from the early to mid 18th Century. It is a traditional six plank nailed construction standing on V cut-out end boards with carved chip detail on the edges. It has its original blacksmith made lock plate and catch and original ring hinges. Inside it has a small candle box.
It is in good original condition and has developed a beautiful rich patina. There have been some historic repairs but it is strong and sturdy and there are no major damages. There are of course signs of age and use, some knocks and marks and minor stains and some signs of historic worm but nothing detrimental. The chest has been cleaned and lightly polished and is ready for use.
