A good example of a Victorian writing slope dating from the late 1800s. The corners and edges are bound in brass with matching brass escutcheon and cartouche. The cartouche is engraved with initials "GHM" and the date 1893.
Inside, the box is fitted with a good quality dark leather writing surface with a gold tooled edge. It comes with a glass inkwell and a pen tray. Both top and bottom sections of the leather surface lift up to reveal extra storage space below. There is also a secret sprung loaded compartment hiding two small drawers which springs open when a piece of wood by the inkwell is lifted up.
The box is in good condition for its age with a beautiful patina and displays very nicely. The leather writing surface is in good condition with no major holes or tears although it is worn along the crease and missing its pull tabs. There are some general signs of age and use, some knocks and light scuffs but nothing untoward or detrimental. Overall the box displays very well.
