A lovely antique writing slope dating from the mid 19th Century. The exterior is veneered with rosewood and the top is beautifully inlaid with tunbridge ware style mosaic inlay depicting a castle below a panel of geometric squares with a wide border of roses around the edge.
The top section lifts up to reveal a pair of original glass inkwells with wooden lids. There is also a pen tray, two stamp slopes and a beautifully inlaid lidded compartment. The sloped front then folds down to reveal a deep red velvet writing slope with tooled edging. The top part of the writing slope lifts up to give extra storage space below. It comes with its original working key.
The box is excellent quality and in good condition for its age. It has been lightly cleaned and polished and it displays very well inside and out. There are some minor signs of age and use but no major damages. There are some minor shrinkage splits and there is some wear on the writing surface along the crease but nothing detrimental.
