Product Details

A good example of a genuine antique Sextant dating from the late 19th Century. The frame of the sextant is black and it has a silvered and brass scale reading to 150 degrees. It comes with original telescope lens, sunshades, mirrors and movable scale reader arm. It also has extra lenses and a dark end lens.

The scale is engraved with the maker's name ; " D.McGregor & Co, Glasgow & Greenock " and inside the box is a sticker for what was likely the retailer "Matheson & Co. 68 Tolbooth...Wynd, Leith."
The sextant comes in its original fitted wooden case with sections to hold the lenses and accessories. It has a brass cartouche and two brass closing latches.
Approximate Measurements :
Box : 10 1/2" (27cm) x 10" (26cm) x 5" (13cm)
The sextant is in good condition for its age. It has been lightly cleaned and displays very well. The lens and mirrors are undamaged and produce a clear image. All parts move as they should. The box is not without some small knocks, splits and some minor signs of age but overall it has a nice aged patina. I have not tested the accuracy of the sextant and it is being sold as a collectors item rather than a working scientific instrument.
