Product Details

A superb example of an early 19th Century writing slope. It is made of beautifully figured rosewood with recessed brass military style handles, brass corners and edges and a matching brass escutcheon and cartouche. The box comes with a glass inkwell, a pen tray and its original working key.

Inside, the lid of the box is lined in maroon leather with a gilt tooled edge which pulls down to reveal a document holder behind and two rows of small leather holders. The interior has a solid mahogany surface which folds out again to reveal a larger writing surface covered in a maroon velvet with a tooled edge. Both of these sections lift up to reveal extra storage space and there are also two secret concealed drawers that are opened by pushing a piece of wood below the inkwell.

It is in excellent original condition and displays beautifully. There are no major damages to the wood exterior, just some small knocks and minor signs of age and use but nothing detrimental. Behind the lid lining there are a few strips of moulding a little loose but nothing major. The patination is beautiful and the whole box is excellent quality.
