Product Details

A superb example of a large Victorian writing slope. It is made of mahogany with recessed brass military style handles, brass edging and a brass cartouche and escutcheon. The cartouche is engraved " Presented to Mr D Mc.Gillivray. Port-Na-Haven. By a few friends. Dec 1860". The box comes with its original working key.

Inside, the box is fitted with a lovely green leather writing surface with a gilt tooled edge. It comes with a glass inkwell and there is also a pen tray, stamp slope and a lidded compartment. Below the writing surface is a secret compartment hiding three small drawers which springs open when a piece of wood by the stamp slope is lifted. There is also a long drawer on the side of the box which is held in place by a brass rod. There is extra storage space below each section of the writing surface for paper or envelopes.

The box is in very good condition for its age and displays beautifully. There are some signs of age and use, some small knocks and marks and a few small strips of inlaid brass missing but there are no major damages to the wood exterior. The interior is clean and tidy and the leather is in good order.
