A superb example of an early 19th Century writing slope. It is made of mahogany with brass carrying handles, brass edges and strapping, an inlaid brass escutcheon and brass cartouche.
Inside, the box is fitted with a lovely deep blue leather writing surface with a gilt tooled edge. It comes with a pair of glass inkwells with brass screw tops and a pen tray. The top and bottom section of the writing surface lift up to give extra storage space below and there is also a long drawer on the side of the box which pulls out when a brass pin is lifted. There is also a small brass arm which allows the top of the box to be held in place at an angle, originally used for reading.
It is in very good condition for its age and it comes with a working key. There are signs of age and use, some marks and light knocks, minor splits and the carrying handles have possibly been replaced at some point but there are no major damages and it displays beautifully.
