Product Details

An original electric shock machine dating from the Victorian Era, contained in its original wooden box with a drawer full of accessories. It has its original paper label below the lid "Improved Patent Magneto Electric Machine for Nervous Diseases ". There is a wooden winding handle which attaches to the front of the box and turns the coil and wheel inside and a large magnet in the box which induces the current. On each side of the box are terminals where the metal probes are connected.

There is a drawer in the side of the box with an inset brass handle which stores the probes and accessories. The drawer contains 2 brass probes wired with terminal connectors plus a further 3 accessories with ebonised wooden handles.

I have not attempted to test the machine as far as whether it generates a shock and it is being sold as seen. However I can confirm that all the parts move as they should and it does produce voltage when connected to a voltmeter.

It is in good condition for its age and displays well. It has been cleaned and lightly polished to retain its aged patina. There are of course signs of age and use, the wires on the instruments are old and frayed in places and there is an old repaired split in the top of the box as well as some other minor knocks and marks and it is missing its escutcheon and key. The drive band connecting the wheel to the coils is strong and still turns well.
