A superb military campaign chest dating from the mid 19th century. It's made of Camphorwood with recessed brass handles, brass corner pieces and it stands on turned feet. It is an excellent quality piece with pretty lined borders around the drawers and the wood has the most beautiful patina.
The chest itself is a typical design, made in two parts joined by wooden pegs with large brass carrying handles on the sides. In addition though, there is an extra section on the top of the chest containing two small drawers.
The large top drawer of the chest conceals a secretaire with a fitted interior. The drawer front hinges down and reveals a lovely leather writing surface and a series of small drawers and pigeonholes.
It is in excellent condition and displays well. The drawers are generally clean and tidy and open smoothly. Of course there are signs of age and use, some small knocks, chips and surface marks but nothing untoward or detrimental. The secretaire has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.
