A truly stunning walnut bookcase of the highest quality dating from the mid to late 19th Century. The bookcase stands on a square plinth with beautifully figured walnut sides. The top of the bookcase is burr walnut with an inlaid border of greek key marquetry and a gilt metal pierced gallery around three sides.
The front of the bookcase is open and is flanked by carved corbels. The position of the shelves is adjustable and there are side holders that can be moved up and down on grooves. Each shelf is lined with a pale green velvet and each shelf has a hinged dust cover with remnants of the original gilded detailing in the lines and dots.
Surprisingly there are no makers marks on the bookcase and it was most likely a bespoke piece for a country house.
It is in excellent condition for its age and displays beautifully. The walnut has a wonderful rich colour and it has developed a beautiful patina. There are a couple of very minor signs of age and use, a few marks on the top surface and a small nick to the very back (see photo) but nothing detrimental and no major damages. It has been cleaned and polished and is ready for use.
