Product Details

Good example of a high quality antique microscope complete with its original lenses dating from the late 19th Century. The microscope parts are made of lacquered brass and it sits on heavy Y-shaped base. The eyepiece tube is manually adjusted to provide the coarse focus and there is an additional fine focus wheel on the side. It has a square stage with a moveable slide rest. Below the staging is a mirror to focus the light and a pin wheel. The top of the tube is marked with the retailer's name " Chadburn Bros. Opticians. Sheffield".

There are two brass objective lenses contained within their original fitted cases. The first marked 1 1/2 and the second marked 1/2 & 1/4 as it is a stacking lens. There are also two original eyepieces of varying strengths.

The microscope appears to be in good working order and I have set it up and tested it with a few old slides. The microscope was easy to focus with both the main focus and the fine focus, and produced a clear and crisp image. I 'm sure the lenses would benefit from a light clean and although in working order it is really being sold as a decorative / collectors item rather than an accurate scientific instrument.

Overall it is in good condition but it has been used and will have normal signs of wear. There are some areas of tarnish and wear to the lacquer and some surface scratches but nothing untoward or detrimental. The brass has been lightly cleaned and polished and it displays very nicely.

The microscope comes in it's original fitted mahogany box with sections for the lenses and an additional drawer for slides at the bottom. The box measures 14 1/2" (37cm) high by 7" (18cm) wide and 5" (13cm) deep. The box is in good condition and is strong and sturdy. It is missing its inlaid escutcheon and we do not have a key but otherwise there are no major damages.
