A lovely high quality mahjong set dating from the early to mid 20th Century, contained within its original travelling case. The pieces are made from ceramic and this is the first set like this I've ever come across. There is a complete set of 144 tiles however there are 3 of the 2 circle tiles and 5 of the 3 circle tiles. The set has always been like this and one of the extra 3 circles can be marked to donate it as a 2 circle. The tiles measure approx 28mm x 21mm x 10mm high. There are also 4 dice, 4 wind selectors and a large quantity of sticks.
The tiles are kept in a specially made wooden box with sliding door and two trays for the tiles and accessories. The box is decorated with beautiful brass corner pieces and a brass carrying handle. It is likely that the front sliding door has been replaced at some point but it is a very good match and isn't detrimental. The box measures approx 8 1/4" (21cm) long x 6 1/4" (16cm) wide x 5 1/2" (14cm) high.
The whole set is in very good condition for its age. It is not new and has been used so please don't buy it expecting it to be brand new. There are general signs of wear and use and some discolouration and small chips on some of the pieces but no major damages and it is a very usable set.
