A good example of a traditional Zanzibar chest dating from the mid 20th century. It is made from a dense exotic hardwood and is decorated with pierced brass sheets and brass studs with nicely carved panels. It has brass carrying handles either side and a brass closing latch. There are two small drawers and the hinged lid opens to a large storage area with a small candle box.
It is in good condition and is strong and sturdy with a lovely rich patina. There are signs of age and use, some small marks and knocks but no major losses or damages. There has been a repair at the front where perhaps an old lock once sat. The interior is generally clean and tidy and the box has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.
