A lovely set of 4 elm country chairs dating from the mid to late 19th Century. They have spindle backs with a bobbin turned top rail and turned legs joined by stretchers. The chairs have rush seats with an old painted layer to preserve the rush which has worn in places to create a lovely textured surface.
There are very slight differences between a few of the chairs but they are certainly from the same workshop and have been together their whole lives.
The chairs are a good size and are comfortable to sit in. The seats are approximately 18" (46cm) high, 14" (36cm) deep and 18" (46cm) wide. The chairs themselves are 35" (89cm) high.
They are in very good original condition with a lovely patina. The chairs are firm and the joints are strong. There are a few knocks and light scuffs around the legs and some minor age-related marks here and there but nothing detrimental. They have all been cleaned and lightly polished and are ready for use.
