A superb Regency rosewood Davenport dating from the early 19th Century. It has an intricate fretwork raised gallery, two carved supports and it stands on beautifully carved bun feet. It has a sloped front with tooled leather writing surface, four drawers to one side and four dummy drawers to the other, all with original turned knobs. The sloped top opens to reveal a fitted birds eye maple interior with two small drawers and three pigeonholes with a long dummy drawer below. The left knob of the dummy drawer pulls out to release the side drawer containing two glass inkwells and two pen trays. The whole piece sits on castors.
The quality and condition are excellent and the rosewood has developed a wonderful patina. The piece has been thoroughly cleaned and gently polished and displays well. The drawers open smoothly and the interior is clean and tidy. There are signs of age and use, one side drawer front has an old repaired split and there are some minor shrinkage splits to the front and back panel and some old repairs to the fretwork but nothing untoward and overall it displays well. It comes with a working key for the side drawers.
