A primitive made butcher's block, originating from France and likely to date from the late 19th century. The top is a solid slab of wood, most probably elm, which is 7 1/2" (19cm) thick and it stands on 3 simple ash legs.
The top is fairly level and the whole piece is strong and sturdy, making it an ideal lamp or side table but also of course as a chopping block in a kitchen.
It is well worn and the the top surface is patinated with years of use. It has suffered from wood worm over the years but this has now been treated and a preservative wood hardener applied and it isn't detrimental.
