A good example of a large English oak silver chest dating from the mid 19th Century. It is covered in iron strapping on the corners and edges with two closing latches and it has large iron carrying handles.
The interior is lined with blue baize and it has a lined tray with brass carrying handles. The lock is stamped for "Hobbs & Son. Makers to Her Majesty" and there is a maker / retailer's label for "Ollivant & Botsford. Silversmiths. Manchester" who were renowned silversmiths of the period.
It is in excellent condition for its age and is strong and sturdy with a lovely rich patina. There are signs of age and use and some general knocks and marks but no major losses or damages. There is some minor wear to the baize lining but generally the interior is clean and tidy. It has been cleaned and gently polished and displays beautifully.
