Product Details

A very large and impressive overmantel mirror dating from the mid 19th Century. An excellent quality piece with very good provenance, having once been the property of Neville Chamberlain.

It has an ornate carved wood and gesso frame with leafy vine shaped columns flanking the ornate scrolling frame with grape and leaf detailing, the crest of the mirror topped with a cherub. There is a vacant oval shape below the cherub where it is likely a porcelain Sevres style plaque would have once rested.

The mirror has been re-painted at some point in it's life and the back has also been replaced. It has its original mercury mirror plate which has worn and foxed in places, leaving spotting and some streaks to give a slightly distressed look.

The mirror is in good condition for its age and displays well. There are some small losses and minor damages around the frame, one small area in particular near the top which is showing a small section of the supporting wire (see photo) but overall it is strong and sturdy. It has been lightly cleaned and is ready for use.

Approximate Measurements:
