Product Details

A large Edwardian desk dating from the early 20th Century. It is made of American Walnut and has an arrangement of 9 drawers around a central kneehole. Each drawer has its original brass handles and the drawers have nicely moulded fronts with reeded borders on the pedestals. There are an additional two smaller drawers along the back of the top of the desk and there is also a recessed pen tray and a pair of glass inkwells. The main surface of the desk has a large sloped writing surface which also lifts up to provide storage below (the drawer below this is a dummy front). Either side of the main slope are two smaller leather writing surfaces. The whole piece stands on castors.

It is an excellent quality desk providing ample storage and flexible working solutions. It has dovetailed drawers and nicely finished moulding that continues on all 4 sides of the desk with additional panelling on the back meaning that it could be used as a freestanding piece as well as against a wall. It comes with its original key which locks the lift-up sloped surface and it has its original brass rail on the back in case you wish to fit a modesty curtain for the kneehole!

The desk is in good condition for its age. The walnut has a nice warm colour and a lovely rich patina. The drawers open well and are generally clean and tidy. There are normal signs of age and use, some minor knocks and light surface marks and some small chips and repairs around the bases but nothing detrimental. There is some wear on the leather surfaces but no major damages or anything detrimental. The desk has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.
