A good example of a large English oak silver chest dating from the early 19th Century. It is covered in iron strapping on the corners and edges with two closing latches and it has large iron carrying handles. It has a brass escutcheon and brass name plate, engraved "George Murant Esq".
It is in good condition for its age and is strong and sturdy with a beautiful rich patina. There are signs of age and use, some chips and knocks, small losses to the strapping and some missing studs but no major losses or damages. There have been some repairs to old shrinkage splits and a few other repairs (see photos) and some signs of historic woodworm that has all been treated as a precaution. It has been cleaned and gently polished and displays beautifully.
