Product Details

A large Georgian oak Settle dating from the mid to late 18th century. It has a panelled back with beautifully shaped arms and a thick planked seat. It stands on turned front legs joined by square stretchers with shaped wavy supports. The seat also comes with a specially made fitted cushion with zip cover.

It is a lovely quality piece with a wonderful patina and the rear of the settle shows how the panels have been hand chiseled. It is full of history and there are some original taper burn marks on the back panels. These ritual protection marks with their distinctive tear-drop shape were believed to protect the household against fire.

The settle is in good condition and displays well. There are of course signs of age and use, small knocks and marks, wear and minor old splits but nothing detrimental. There are signs of historic worm which has all been treated as a precaution and hasn't affected the piece structurally or aesthetically. There have also been some historic repairs and restorations but the whole piece is strong and sturdy and ready for use.
