A good antique elm blanket box dating from the early to mid 19th century with a lovely rich patina. It is well made and has its original strap hinges. There is a faint painted name "W.Lowell" on the back of the box, most likely a previous owner. A good size for a coffee table, end of the bed storage or toy trunk.
It is in good condition for its age. It is strong and sturdy and generally clean and tidy inside. There are signs of use and age, some general knocks and marks and a few small chips and splits but nothing untoward or detrimental. There are signs of old woodworm around the box which has all been treated as a precaution and hasn't affected the box structurally or aesthetically. It has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.
