Product Details

A superb oak crossbanded bureau dating from the late 18th / early 19th Century. It has a sloped front above two short and three long drawers, each with brass plate handles and matching escutcheons. The drawers are beautifully bordered with mahogany crossbanding which continues around the sloped front which has additional inlaid ebony stringing.

Two pulls support the front which opens to reveal a series of small pigeon holes and drawers with beautifully shaped friezes. It also has a lovely red leather writing surface with a gilt tooled edge. It is an excellent quality piece and the sloped front comes with its original working key.

It is in excellent condition for its age and the oak has developed a wonderful rich colour over the years. It has been cleaned and gently polished, retaining the original patina. There are some minor signs of age and use, some old knocks and marks and a few small repairs to the crossbanding but no major damages and the piece is strong and sturdy. The handles have been changed at some point but suit the piece well. The interior is in good condition and the dovetailed drawers open smoothly and are generally clean and tidy inside.
