Product Details

A superb example of an early 19th Century campaign writing slope. It is made of solid mahogany with recessed brass military style handles, brass edges, brass escutcheon and matching brass cartouche with decorative brass inlay.

Inside, the box is fitted with a lovely blue/green writing surface with a tooled edge. It comes with a glass inkwell, a pen tray and two lidded compartments. It also comes with its original brass campaign candle holders that screw into the holes on the front. It also comes with its original book rest which slots into the outside and the top can then be held up at an angle by the brass latch inside. Below the writing surface is a secret compartment hiding three small drawers which springs open when a piece of wood on the far side of the box is pushed. There is also a long drawer on the side of the box which pulls out when a brass pin is lifted.

It is in excellent condition for its age and displays beautifully. It comes with a working key for the main box and a key for the internal surface however this has shrunk away and doesn't now lock (see photo). There are no major damages to the wood exterior, just some small knocks and minor signs of age and use but nothing detrimental.
