Product Details

Superb example of a Victorian watercolour paint box manufactured by the famous Winsor & Newton. It contains many of its original paint blocks and other accessories. The top tray of paints lifts out and reveals a brush / pencil tray below and two further storage sections. The box comes with its original white pottery palette stamped for Winsor & Newton and original cut glass water bowl. There is also another white pottery water bowl, likely not original and a later replacement. The palette lifts out and there some further storage compartments below with a few old charcoal sticks and pencils.

The box has a storage drawer with a pretty recessed brass handle, held in place by a brass rod. There are some old paint tubes, brushes and a Winsor & Newton palette knife.
The whole set is contained within a good quality mahogany box with the original paper label below the lid. This label reads "Winsor & Newton. Manufacturers by Appointment to Her Majesty and to T.R.H The Prince and Princess of Wales. 38 Rathbone Place. London." This helps to date the set to the late 1800s after the death of Prince Albert.
Approximate Measurements:
Length : 11 1/2" (29cm)
Depth : 8" (20cm)
Height : 3" (8cm)
The whole set is in good condition for its age and has the look of a genuine well used Artist's box, as original now as the day it was last used. The paints have all been used and many are worn and the pottery palette has a chip on the reverse. The box is in good condition with a lovely aged patina and no major damage. The interior has some general marks and old paint marks here and there. The box does not come with a key.
