Product Details

Stunning example of a late 19th Century leather medical case, complete with its original contents.

The case itself is made from leather with intricate tooled detail and design. It has a central carrying handle and two straps that buckle at the front as well as a metal latch.

Inside, the case is sectioned to hold the various bottles. There are two fitted trays in the middle that lift out which hold further equipment. There is a section in the lid that folds down to form a compartment for storing papers etc.

The case contains all of its original glass bottles, the majority of which have their original paper labels and glass or cork stoppers. There are 25 bottles in total of various sizes. The case also contains a set of travelling weighing scales and weights. There is a glass pestle and mortar and a glass roller for preparing the medicines as well as two glass measuring beakers. In addition there is also a spatula, a magnifying eye piece and a tin.

What makes this piece particularly nice is that it comes with a selection of original hand written prescriptions and receipts. It really is like a little time capsule. Each piece of paper or envelope has been beautifully preserved and most are dated 1893 or 1896, helping us to accurately date the manufacture and period that the case was in use.

Measurements :

Length : 12" (30cm)

Width : 7" (18cm)

Height : 6" (15cm)

Condition :

Overall the condition of the case and contents is superb. Every fitted section is complete and I believe has its proper and original item in it. I don't believe there is anything missing

The leather case has a beautiful aged patina with many signs of age and use but no major damages. The case has been well maintained and it looks like the hinges and straps have been replaced at some time. The carrying handle has some damage at one end where it looks like it has torn and later been repaired (see photo). Please note I do not have a key to the lock and do not know if it is working.

Inside is clean and tidy and the partitions are sturdy and in good condition. The lining in the lid of the box has worn and frayed in places however behind the lining in the document compartment is in excellent condition.

There is no major damage to any of the glass bottles. There are some nibbles and small chips around the tops of some of them but nothing serious. Many bottles have retained their original paper labels. Some bottles still contain liquid and powder however all liquids will have to be removed for postage unless collected in person. For postage abroad all contents of the bottles will be removed.

The glass pestle and mortar, roller and measures are all in excellent condition. It is worth noting that the scales are not strung with cord but all components are there.

This really is a fantastic set, not to be missed. It is so rare to find something so complete and original. Each element has been cleaned and it is ready for display.

With an item this age that has clearly been well used there will be signs of wear and general use. We have done our best to document this but the best description certainly comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions please ask.
