Product Details

A superb set of spelling tiles dating from the 19th Century contained in their original wooden box. Originally used as a teaching aid for young children learning their alphabet and spelling.

The tiles are made of bone (cow/bovine) and there are 136 in total - 4 of every letter plus 8 letters for the vowels A E I O U and also 8 Y's. The tiles are double sided with the upper case letter on one side and lower case on the other. The tiles come in a mahogany box with a sliding lid and an inset plaque which reads 'Spelling Alphabet' on the top of the box.

The whole set is in excellent condition and I believe it is complete due to the number of tiles being uniform, there are certainly no obvious ones missing. There are no major damages to any of the tiles however the letter on a handful of tiles is a little worn. The box is in good condition with a nice rich patina and the lid slides open easily.

Approximate Measurements :

Box : 5 1/2" x 4" (14cm x 10cm)

Tiles : 3/4" x 1/2" (1.5cm x 1cm)
