Product Details

A superb adjustable reading stand dating from the late 19th Century. The table and stand are made of mahogany while the base is heavy cast iron and the arm of the stand is brass. It is excellent quality and so well made. Each part of the stand is adjustable - the height of the table, the position of the stand and the angle of the book rest. The original enamel maker's badge is still present on the back of the book rest - "John Carter's Patent Literary Machine. 64 New Cavendish St. Portland Place. London. W"

It is in excellent condition for its age and is strong and sturdy. All the parts move well and the mahogany has a wonderful rich patination. There are of course signs of age and use but no major damages or anything detrimental.

The table top is 15" / 38cm in diameter and the book rest itself is 14" / 36cm wide x 9" / 23cm high. At its lowest height the table is 25" / 64cm high with the reading stand adding further height and this can of course be adjusted and extended.
