Product Details

Fantastic hand carved figure of Saint Raymond, believed to date from around the turn of the century. It is believed to be Spanish as Saint Raymond is a spanish saint and it has 'San Ramon' painted on the side of the base. He is traditional in form and is shown wearing a red and white robe with his hat by his feet which is common in many of his portraits. His hat is made of metal. The carving has been over-painted to distinguish his features.

Saint Raymond Nonnatus is the patron saint of keeping silent, pregnancies, the unborn, midwives and children. Padlocks can be placed at his altar to stop gossip, rumours and bad speech. They are also used to keep secrets and stop profanities or lying.
He is in good original condition with a fantastic authentic patina. He is sturdy and stands well and most of the original paint is still present. It is not the finest of carvings but this is part of the charm. The wooden base has some splits in it and there are some small knocks here and there but nothing major. His hands are clasped and I presume he would have either held something at one point or the owner of the statue would have given him something to hold.
