Product Details

Beautiful example of a Victorian Hydrometer, used to measure and regulate the alcohol content in drinks. The set comes with its original brass float and all 9 graduated weights. It also comes with its original thermometer and proof measuring ruler. The float is stamped "SIKES 4773" and each of the weights are also marked with their weight and '4773'. The thermometer is marked "Hughes & Son. 59 Fenchurch St. London". I have never come across a set with a proof measure before. It looks like there should be two as there are two slots but nonetheless its an interesting instrument - very well made with brass end plates and it is marked "Loftus Maker. 146 Oxford St. London".

The whole set comes in its original inlaid mahogany box with fitted lined interior. The box has a lovely rich patina and there is an inset plaque in the centre of the lid which reads "Sikes' Hydrometer. Hughes & Son. 59 Fenchurch Street. London".
It is a fine example of a high quality set and it is in excellent condition for its age. There is a small dink in the brass float and general tarnishing on the brass of some pieces. The proof measure has slightly warped with age and there is a small fray in the silk lining of the lid of the box but otherwise there are no damages and the whole piece displays beautifully.
Approximate Measurements:
Box: 10" long x 2" high x 4 1/2" deep
Length of thermometer : 9"
Length of float : 6 1/2"
