Product Details

A superb quality early 20th Century Barograph by Short & Mason. The barograph is cased in oak with carved stylised columns and bevelled glass. It has a drawer for storing new and used charts and it stands raised on four small bracket feet. There is an ivorine plaque for "Short & Mason. London" within the case.

The clockwork eight-day movement is housed in the drum, fitted with a seven day chart which covers one rotation of the drum. The aneroid barometer mechanism has 8 stacked vacuum capsules and utilises a gate suspension for improved sensitivity. The nib is on the end of a long arm which moves to record the pressure as the drum rotates.
It comes with a large number of recording charts and it has its original glass ink bottle recessed into the case. New ink and charts are both readily available to buy online.
The case measures approximately 15" (38cm) wide by 9 1/2" (24cm) deep and 9" (23cm) tall. The drum has a standard diameter of 4" (10cm).
The clockwork mechanism is in good working order and the drum rotates as it should. I have not referenced the pressure readings for accuracy but I have no reason to believe it shouldn't be in working order. It will however of course need calibrating and setting up to the correct pressure when it arrives with you (any queries please ask).
It is in excellent condition for its age and has clearly been very well looked after. There are small marks here and there commensurate with age but there is no damage to report and the wood has a nice aged patina.
