Lovely antique gimballed compass contained within a good quality mahogany box, dating from the early to mid 20th century. The compass is mounted within the box on a metal ring which allows it to swivel and turn, designed to do so to compensate the movement on a boat.
The compass is liquid filled and has a metal rim and the body is painted black. The black and white face is of traditional design. The box is nicely made with dovetail joints and brass catches.
Approximate Measurements :
Box : 7" square by 6" high
Diameter of Compass : 5"
The compass is in good condition and has clearly been well looked after. The compass itself is in working order and is, as far as I can tell, fairly accurate. It moves freely on the gimbal mount. There is a bubble in the liquid which can be seen in the photos. The box is clean and tidy with just a few small marks. The compass has been lightly polished and the box has been polished and overall the whole piece displays very nicely.
