Product Details

Lovely example of a complete set of Victorian hydrometer proof floats, used to measure and regulate the alcohol content in drinks. This small pocket sized set was used by the inspector to quickly and instantly test drinks. There are twelve different weighted glass beads each with a number on the top from 22-34. Inside the lid is the original paper label which reads "For Proof Spirits. If it be proof, the bead will sink to the bottom." and there is an accompanying table which corresponds the numbers of the beads to the different types of spirits.

The whole set comes in its original turned wooden pot with small holes for the ends of the beads to sit in. There is no reference anywhere to a maker.
It is a rare little object. I have seen plenty of brass hydrometer sets but never a set like this. It is in excellent condition for its age with no damages to any of the glass beads. The box is in good condition with a lovely rich patina. The whole piece displays beautifully.
