Product Details

by Newton & Co, 3 Fleet Street, London

Fine example of an antique Surveyor's compass by an unusual South American maker. The compass itself is contained within its original brass case with gun metal finish. The lid of the case comes off to reveal the silvered dial of the compass. It has a folding sighting vane and pinhole which open up at either end of the compass. It also comes with its original leather protective case with carrying strap.
The instrument is in good condition for its age. All parts move as intended and it points due north but it is being sold as a decorative / collectors piece rather than an accurate scientific instrument. The case is free from any major dents or damages. There are some surface scratches / general marks and scuffs but nothing detrimental. The leather case is also in very good condition. It has been lightly cleaned and displays very nicely.
Approximate Measurements:
Diameter of compass : 2 3/4" (7cm)
Height shut : 1" (3cm)
