A lovely mahogany campaign desk dating from the late 19th Century. It is a pedestal desk with 1 long map drawer below the writing surface and a further 6 smaller drawers in the pedestals.
The top of the desk has a raised gallery around the edge and its original black leather-type writing surface. It has its original brass inset military handles and internal brass latches to lock the desk parts in place. It stands on turned bun feet which thread into the base so they could be removed for transport.
The feet have been tipped slightly to add an extra inch of height, giving ample leg clearance in the kneehole of 24” (61cm).
The drawer locks are stamped “Graves & Son, Devonport”.
The desk is in good condition for its age. It is well travelled but has a lovely patina and has obviously been well looked after.
The drawers open smoothly and are generally clean and tidy with a few minor ink stains. There are signs of age and use, some general light marks and knocks but nothing detrimental. There is some wear to the writing surface, a few marks and blemishes but we have chosen to keep it original rather than replace it and it is perfectly usable. The desk has been cleaned and polished and is ready for use.
