A superb example of an early 19th Century campaign writing slope. It is made of solid mahogany with recessed brass military style handles, brass corners and edges and brass escutcheon with matching brass cartouche.
Inside, the lid of the box is lined in blue leather with a gilt tooled edge. The centre folds down to reveal a document holder behind and it is bordered by further small holders. The interior surface is covered in a deep blue surface with tooled edge and the box then folds out further to reveal a larger writing surface. It comes with a glass inkwell, a pen tray and its original working key. Below the writing surface is a secret compartment hiding two small drawers which is accessed by sliding the covering piece of wood upwards.
It is in excellent original condition and displays beautifully. There are no major damages to the wood exterior, just some small knocks and minor signs of age and use but nothing detrimental. The patination is beautiful and the whole box is excellent quality.
