A superb example of an early 19th Century writing slope. It is made of beautifully figured mahogany with recessed brass military style handles and intricate brass inlaid borders with a central cartouche engraved "M.H.G. 1846".
It comes with its original working key and the top section of the box opens to reveal a pair of glass inkwells with brass tops, a pen tray, and a couple of lidded compartments.
The rest of the box opens out into a large writing surface covered in an old red velvet. Both sections of the writing surface lift up to reveal extra storage space below.
It is in excellent original condition and displays beautifully. There are no major damages to the wood exterior, just some small knocks and minor signs of age and use but nothing detrimental. There is some wear and a couple of old ink stains on the velvet but it is certainly still usable.
