Product Details

A good example of a rare Travelling Microscope dating from the early 20th Century. It comes complete with a full range of lenses and accessories in its original fitted case. The foot is signed 'E.Leitz Wetzlar No.103722' .

The microscope is made of lacquered brass on a Y-shaped foot which folds flat. It tilts, has a rack and pinion main focus and additional fine focus on the sides of the arm. It has a square stage which also folds sideways to pack the microscope into the box. It comes with two stage clips and below the stage is a large adjustable mirror and substage.

It comes with three eyepiece lenses and three Leitz objective lenses - 3, 6 and 1/12. It also comes with 'Oel' in a brass holder and a Dark Ground Illuminator.

The microscope appears to be in good working order and I have set it up and tested it with a few old slides. I'm sure the lenses would probably benefit from a clean but they produce a clear and bright image all the same and the microscope was easy to focus.

The microscope is in good condition for its age. It has been used and has some normal signs of wear but nothing untoward or detrimental. There are some small knocks and light scratches on the base and some tarnishing on the brass. The lenses have small specks of dirt on and although in working order it is really being sold as a decorative / collectors item rather than a scientific instrument. The microscope has been cleaned and lightly polished and it displays beautifully.

It comes in its original fitted box which is good quality with a metal carrying handle, metal corner pieces and it comes with its original key. There are some general signs of age and marks on the box, it is missing one metal foot and the leather has worn in placesbut it has developed a nice aged patina and is generally strong and sturdy. The box measures 3 1/2" high X 11 1/2" long X 8" wide.
