Stunning example of a late 19th Century leather medical case with fitted interior, complete with much of its original contents.
The case itself is made from leather with intricate tooled detail and design. It has a central carrying handle and two straps that buckle at the front as well as a metal latch.
Inside, the case is sectioned to hold the various bottles. There are two fitted trays in the middle that lift out which hold further equipment. There is a section in the lid that folds down to form a compartment for storing papers etc.
The case contains many of its original glass bottles, the majority of which have their original paper labels and glass stoppers. There are 14 bottles in total of various sizes. The case also contains a glass pestle and mortar and a glass measuring beaker. In addition there is also a pair of scissors, tweezers, a spatula and a glass nasal douche.
Measurements :
Length : 10" (25cm)
Width : 6" (15cm)
Height : 5" (13cm)
Condition :
Overall the condition of the case and contents is excellent. The glass bottles are all in good condition and there is just one with damage around the neck (see photo). One bottle is missing and another section has been padded out at the bottom to hold a smaller bottle that probably wasn't original. Many bottles have retained their original paper labels. Some bottles still contain liquid and powder however all liquids will have to be removed for postage unless collected in person. For postage abroad all contents of the bottles will be removed.
The leather case has a beautiful aged patina with many signs of age and use. The end of one leather strap has broken off but the broken piece is in the case and could be repaired. Other than this there is no damage and the case displays beautifully. Please note I do not have a key to the lock and do not know if it is working.
Inside is clean and tidy and the partitions are sturdy and in good condition. The lining in the lid of the box has worn and frayed in places however behind the lining in the document compartment is in excellent condition.
The glass pestle and mortar and measures are all in excellent condition. The scissors and tweezers are tarnished and slightly rusted.
Each element has been cleaned and polished and the whole set is ready for display.
