Product Details

A superb Japanese lacquer writing box dating from the early 20th Century. The outer in red lacquer with the top panel decorated with traditional scenes in mother of pearl inlay against a black ground. The box opens to a striking high gloss interior in the same red lacquer with a cut out of Mount Fuji below the lid acting as a letter or stationery rack. There are two lidded pots, a ruler and a couple of other storage sections, all edged in gilt paint.

The lower part of the box folds out again to provide a sloped writing surface and both sections here lift up to provide additional storage compartments. The writing surface has been recovered with a blue floral material at some point. There is an additional large storage drawer located in the side of the box with a small metal handle.
The box is in good condition for its age and displays well. The outer is showing signs of age and use, some fading and there are surface marks and small losses around the edges but no major damages and it has a lovely patina. The interior by comparison is in excellent condition and barely looks used. It has been cleaned and lightly polished and overall the box displays very well and is certainly a nice usable item.
