Antique Apothecary Box

Circa 1840

Stunning example of an early 19th Century mahogany apothecary case, complete with most of its original contents. It is an unusual shape, being long and thin but is very beautiful. The box itself is made from mahogany with an inset brass carrying handle, matching brass escutcheon and brass hook catches.

Inside, the box is sectioned to hold the various bottles and has a velvet padded lid to keep them safe in transport. There are 11 sections in total of various size and depth and the box comes with 11 glass bottles, all with their original ground glass stoppers. Below the bottles is a drawer which contains two further small glass bottles and the original weighing scales and weights - truly everything a travelling doctor would have needed in the 19th century!

Overall the condition of the box and contents are superb. It must be missing a glass bottle in the top as one hole has a small one in but looks like it is missing another. However the set displays beautifully and is certainly one of the most complete I've come across.

The mahogany box is strong and sturdy with a beautiful aged patina.There are some small knocks and marks and there is some damage to the rear panel and side at the very bottom where the wood has chipped but it isn't detrimental. Inside it is clean and tidy and the partitions are sturdy and in good condition. I do not have a key for the box and it is also missing the rod that goes down inside the box to lock the drawer in place.

There is no major damage to any of the glass bottles. There are some nibbles and small chips around the tops of some of them but nothing serious and the contents of the drawer are also in excellent condition.

This really is a fantastic set, not to be missed. It is so rare to find something so complete and original. The box has been carefully cleaned and polished to revive the wood and each element has been cleaned and it is ready for display
