An attractive and good quality 'Smoker's Bow' or 'Captain's' armchair dating from the late 19th century. It has a comfortable wide and deep elm seat with broad arms, turned spindles and turned legs joined by a double stretcher. The rear of the seat is stamped with the maker's initials 'H.G'
It is approximately 29 1/2" (75cm) high and it is 25 1/2" (65cm) wide across the arms. The seat is approximately 20" (51cm) deep and 15" (38cm) high. It has lost a little bit of height as the bottom of the legs have worn over the years.
It is in good condition for its age. It has developed a nice aged patina and is a strong and sturdy chair. The chair is not without a few small marks and signs of age and use and there is a small repair on the back (see photo) but no major damages and nothing detrimental. The grain is wonderful and it displays very nicely.
