Antique Electric Shock Therapy Machine

Circa 1880

Fantastic electric shock machine dating from the Victorian Era, contained in its original wooden box with an intensity dial and a drawer full of original probes. There is a wooden winding handle which attaches to the front of the box and turns the coil and wheel inside and a large magnet in the box which induces the current. On each side of the box are terminals where the metal probes are connected.

What makes this particular machine special is the raised dial on top of the box. It is housed in a brass mount, covered with bevelled glass. The paper dial has a metal pointer which is connected to the machine to measure the intensity of the current being generated.

Not only this but this model also has a side drawer with inset brass handle which stores the probes. I've had machines with drawers and machines with dials but never one with both. The drawer contains 6 original probes with turned wood handles and are wired with terminal connectors.

Approximate Measurements :

Length of Box : 10" (26cm)

Height : 6" (15cm)

Depth : 5" (13cm)

I have not attempted to test the machine as far as whether it generates a shock (!) and it is being sold as seen. However I can confirm that all the parts move as they should and the dial moves.

It is in superb condition for its age and displays beautifully. It has been cleaned and lightly polished to bring the brass parts to life and the box has been given a light wax to retain its aged patina. It is complete and the probes are original with lovely turned handles and brass ends. The wires are in excellent condition with no major fraying. The box has picked up some light scuffs and minor knocks over the years but nothing detrimental. The paper dial is clean and easy to read with just a few small spots of rust. The drive band connecting the wheel to the coils is strong and still turns well. There is no key to the box.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully. This is a very rare machine and a fantastic piece for the collector. It is not something to be missed. If you have any questions at all please ask.
