An unusual and highly decorative carved oak throne chair dating from the 19th century. It is most likely Continental, probably originating from Italy. The carved oak frame has an X-frame style base with sleigh feet, scrolling arms and upright supports terminating in carved lions heads.
The back rest and seat are made from leather which is strung to brass rails. Both pieces are ornately decorated with the top panel having a pressed repousse design including an anchor armorial.
It is a striking piece and very decorative with lots of carved detail and both the wood and the leather have a wonderful patina. We have been able to preserve the original leather by backing it onto new stronger pieces and re-stringing it, closely following the original design.
The chair is in good condition for its age and displays beautifully. The original leather is of course showing signs of wear and age but the frame of the chair itself is strong and sturdy with no major damages.
