Fantastic tabletop collectors cabinet dating from the early 20th Century. It is a very well made good quality piece and has a side locking mechanism which I have never before seen on cabinets like this. The side of the drawers are notched and lock in place when the side panel is closed. This panel can be locked shut and has a working key.
Chests such as this were used for storing all sorts of things - collectors would use them to store samples in, whether that be rocks, butterflies, or coins etc. This particular chest has twelve long drawers, graduating in depth from top to bottom. All the drawers are lined with red velvet and have a small metal knob. It is excellent quality designed to sit proudly on a table top. It is a piece of furniture, it is not the rough sort that was made to be kept in a shed or workshop.
Overall, it is in good original condition and has developed a lovely aged patina. It is not new and it is handmade so please do not expect it to be like new modern furniture. Some of the metal knobs are slightly chipped and one is a bit bigger than the others. One drawer front is a slightly different colour to the rest and looks like it may have been replaced and made more recently than the others but it is certainly a very good job. The cabinet has picked up some knocks and scuffs and sign of wear over the years but the drawers are clean and all run smoothly and it displays very well. It is certainly usable and the new owner should be proud to display their collection in such a beautiful cabinet.
