A lovely carved oak cutlery or housekeepers box dating from the late 19th century. It has profusely carved decorative panels of foliage on all sides and also carved insignia which looks to be M.V. The carving is very well executed in relief and is similar to that of Black Forest pieces. The box has two hinged lids that open to divided compartments. Both compartments have locks so would have locked shut originally but we do not have the keys. The box also has a brass carrying handle on the top.
It is in good solid order with no major damages. It has been well used and developed a beautiful rich patina through years of use. There are some general signs of age and use, some small knocks and minor losses but nothing detrimental.
Height : 5" (13cm) excluding handle
