Nice example of an early oak planked Sword Chest. It is a traditional nailed construction standing on small bracket feet. It has a hinged lid and is generally clean and tidy inside with its original floor and original hinges. The lock plate has been altered at a later date and there have been some historic repairs but it displays well.
It is in good condition for its age. It has developed a beautiful rich patina and is strong and sturdy. There are signs of age and use, some knocks and marks and there is a slight warp in the lid but nothing detrimental. There are some historic woodworm holes here and there but nothing to concern us. The chest has been cleaned and lightly polished and is ready for use.
