A good example of a small english Oak Coffer dating from the mid to late 18th Century. It has a traditional panelled construction standing on four block feet. The front is decorated with a simple frieze rail of arched carvings and further circular motifs in the front panels. The lid opens on metal strap hinges and it has a working lock and key.
It is in good condition and has developed a beautiful rich patina. There are some signs of age and use, some knocks and marks and old historic shrinkage splits but nothing untoward. There are signs of old worm and rot in the bottom of the legs which is all historic but has been treated as a precaution and it is strong and sturdy. It has had its original ring hinges removed at some point and replaced with the current ones but it isn't detrimental and overall it displays very well.
